Summer Energy Savings Tips
Ten Ways to Save Energy & Reduce Your Electric Bill
1. Turn off everything not in use – lights, TVs, VCRs, CD and DVD players, computers
2. Close the shades on your east and west facing windows during daylight hours. This reduces the temperature in your house and helps the air conditioner do its job without running up your electricity bill.
3. Look for the Energy Star label, the symbol for energy efficiency, when replacing your heating and cooling systems
4. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) in place of comparable incandescent bulbs to save about 50 percent on your lighting costs.
5. Install a programmable thermostat. The energy savings will offset the cost of a basic unit in less than a year.
6. Check for holes or cracks around your walls, ceilings, windows, doors, light and plumbing fixtures, switches, and electrical outlets that can leak air into or out of your home
7. Avoid placing lamps or television sets near your thermostat.
8. Clean or replace air conditioning filters monthly.
9. Run full loads in the washer, dryer and dishwasher to minimize the number of times you activate these appliances. When possible, use cold water.
10. Make sure your appliances and heating and cooling systems are properly maintained.
