Price to Compare

In order to make a smart choice, it’s important to understand how the price you pay for electricity is calculated and what you currently pay. The key to understanding what you pay for electricity is to look up your price to compare number found on the bottom of page two on your electric bill.

Each generation supplier provides the District of Columbia Public Service Commission with its average price per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which enables you to see which supplier has the best rates for you and your household.

Typically, the average residential customer pays $0.0683 or 6.83 cents per kWh – the 6.83 cents is the price to compare and is what an average customer would use when evaluating offers from other generators. To learn more about how your electricity use is measured, go to www.pepco.com or call 1-866-889-3261 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

After you find your price to compare number on the back of your electric bill, the District of Columbia Public Service Commission can help you figure out the best option for you by using their rate calculator. You can also contact the District of Columbia Public Service Commission and discuss your options with them at 202-626-5100. The Office of the People’s Counsel can also guide you through the process by calling 202-727-3071.
